5. Varenka

This is a very old Russian legend about Varenka, a poor and lonesome little woman from a small village far, far away in Russia. When the world war began all the people abandoned their homes, running as fast as they could. Only Varenka remained in her small cottage and started praying to God. Her prayers were so honest and personal that God heard them: outside it began to snow. Slowly the village was covered under a thick layer of white - and under this blanket of snow, Varenka survived.
